When I dress my avatar in the wardrobe, it doesn't carry over to the display in the FA shops. It just shows the last things I had on before I changed. How do I fix this?

You probably had the design preview first in the shop and then put it on your FA. As far as I know, there is no other way round (from FA to preview).

You can't take your wardrobe outfit to your preview outfit. It might be an update in the future, but as of right now you can only take from the preview to the wardrobe. :3
