We're clearly doing our own thing with inspiration from various mythologies and fantasy settings. Pegasus as a species of winged horse has been used in other fantasy lore, quite commonly if I'm not mistaken. One of the more popular examples that comes to mind being My Little Pony. Strictly speaking, our use of Kelpie is not entirely accurate to its mythology either, though it has quite a few variations. As we're not claiming to be accurate in any way shape or form, the name won't be changed - for any of our pet species.
I do hope you enjoy them all the same.

Howdy folks! First let me apologize for the communication drought we've had this year. The end of 2020 was a busy time for us staffers what with holidays and all, then the new year came and some of us have continued to be busy. On a personal note, I've gone back to school, which started in January and has been consuming most of my time. Having not worked a traditional job since 2019 it has been quite an adjustment for me, but I am finding that I'm enjoying myself and doing well grade-wise. Now that I've started to get into a rhythm with school-work I can focus on the other important aspects of my life; namely Faenaria!
That brings me to our biggest pet release yet! We have a total of eight new genera to share with you this time. This is partly to make up for a release we missed in January and to begin our new release schedule. Instead of bi-monthly pet releases we will be focusing more on customs and site pets. Therefore, new genera won't be discovered in Faenaria but every 6-8 months going forward. This allows us to put coloring at a higher place on the list, as well as frees up our creative energy and funds for new FA items and RPG resources.
Speaking of site pets... Indy has unfortunately been on hiatus the last few months as well and that has meant a delay in getting the site pet feature rolled out. However, we should be moving forward sometime this month unless his schedule changes again, so please bear with us a little longer.
Now, on to the main event of this post: The New Pets!
-- Do note that all of these colorations will be made available as site pets once that feature launches!
The staff and I have already begun work on additional colorations for the rest of the pets as well!
PSDs for the new pets can be found on the Genus Codex Page.

Seafoam Reflections Kelpie colored by Bruja | Kelpie Common Genus Kelpies are swift, water-dwelling creatures that move in large herds, most commonly found near coral reefs, although there are some hardier breeds that can be found in cold waters. They can be vicious in defending their territory; large herds have been known to turn away single leviathans, although leviathans technically pose no threat to a kelpie herd. If caught young, or bred in captivity, kelpies can be trained to pull small boats, and are used by some remote island populations as the main mode of transportation from island to island. A wild adult kelpie is typically too strong to capture, let alone train; kelpies befriended in adulthood are rare. The undines keep domestic herds of kelpies, much like fae keep domestic herds of alicorns and pegasi, and use them for travel and transport. Saltwater undines refer to their kelpies as hippocampi, an old term that used to specifically denote saltwater kelpies, while kelpie was used for the freshwater variety, but it has fallen out of use in most dialects, except among the ocean-dwelling undines. |
Suikoa Common Genus A common sight in ornamental ponds, suikoa are peaceful creatures that can, on occasion, grant wishes or foretell the future. It's difficult to tell which suikoa have magic ability, however, and the wealthy will often keep large schools of them for the express purpose of breeding and identifying these magical suikoa. Strangely, despite the large numbers of suikoa kept in the ponds of the nobility, the most common recipients of suikoa gifts are poor folk. Suikoa come in a vast array of colors, although those found in the wild tend to not be as bright and varied as their domesticated cousins. The coral growing on their backs is prized for jewelry, but may only be collected after it is shed, or all suikoa in the pond will disappear overnight. Some say that the suikoa can shapeshift into something resembling a tiny ryu, although these stories have never been proven. | Radiant Koi Suikoa colored by weezee |
Morning Glory Pegasus colored by SeaCrest | Pegasus Common Genus Graceful creatures with a distaste for captivity, it's rare to find a pegasus in a less-than-ideal situation. Mistreated pegasi can and will simply leave, and despite their elegant appearance, they are incredibly strong, and can be vicious when cornered. Those who treat their pegasi well are permitted to fly with them, and are often sought-after messengers and couriers. Pegasi use passive air magic to help keep themselves aloft. This is instinctive, and most pegasi do not learn to use air magic deliberately. Technically speaking their wings should not be able to support the additional weight of a passenger, but due to the inborn ability to influence the air around them, most pegasi are perfectly capable of carrying extra weight, if they choose to. |
Okori Common Genus Okori are social canines that hunt in large packs in the frozen north, clashing frequently with kesshos, as their territories often overlap. The icy spines that adult okori carry are markers of their skill; the more spines an okori has, the better their control over their magic is. Most of this magic is instinctive and rather passive, helping them survive in even the coldest conditions, and keeping them from slipping on ice and hard-packed snow, but adult okori in successful packs can devote additional time to developing their magic in a more focused manner, learning tricks such as thawing ice to access drinking water, lowering the ambient air temperature to dull the senses of their prey, and sometimes even using ice directly in their fighting, as a wall to shield themselves or to trap or spear prey. Fights between okori packs are rare, as they are respectful of other packs' territory, and when a pack grows too large, groups will leave voluntarily to seek a new home. | Permafrost Okori colored by weezee |
Lacey Moray Leviathan colored by Bruja | Leviathan Rare Genus Immense creatures living in the deep waters of Faenaria, leviathans are rarely seen for very long. They move in small pods, up to five at a time, and have been observed both protecting sailors and ships as well as destroying them, depending on the pod. Leviathans grow very slowly, and are deceptively small at a young age, about the size of a horse at birth, and remain with their pod until they are roughly thirty years old, at which point they are considered mature enough to leave the pod and seek a new pod, or to create their own. The largest reported leviathan was twice the size of a heavy galleon, although luckily for both crew and cargo, it was one of the more peaceful leviathans encountered. |
Kraken Rare Genus Krakens are volatile, antsy creatures, are very sensitive to their environment. An ancient species, they haven't changed much since they first came into being, and thus are easily irritated by the inventions of the fae, including, most importantly, ships. A fully grown kraken is a formidable opponent for an adult leviathan, and are considerably faster in the water, making them a terrifying predator on the open seas. They have a reputation as ship-killers which is fairly earned, as they can detect ships on the water from miles away, and dislike the strangeness of them. Fortunately, krakens are rare, and tend to live in the depths of the ocean, where they are seldom disturbed. | Dark Stalker Kraken colored by ScuroFenice |
Tangle Vine Basilisk colored by Rhowyn | Basilisk Rare Genus A fearsome predator, basilisks are not for the faint of heart. Basilisks not only have razor sharp teeth, but they also have the power to turn things to stone at will. The superstitious claim that if you do not meet their gaze directly, they cannot turn you to stone, but this is untrue; a basilisk only has to graze you with teeth or tailtip to start the process, although it can be accelerated by prolonged contact. It is rare to encounter more than one basilisk at a time; they are solitary creatures, preferring to live in caves or rocky valleys, and only tolerate other basilisks during mating season. There is no known antidote to basilisk venom, although it appears that the basilisk can control when venom is released, as not all injuries result in petrification. |
Moonbun Rare Genus Moonbunnies are curious creatures that are only active at night. While they can, technically, be awake during the day, they don't like it, and are sensitive to bright light. They are very magical by nature, and even young moonbunnies can use telekinesis. On full moons, moonbunnies will gather in large groups to recharge their magic, and to socialize with other moonbunnies. Moonbunnies are often prized for their silky fur, which, when collected and spun, can be used as a thread to bind charms and talismans, in addition to making an incredibly soft (and expensive!) cloth. | Bloodshard Moonbun colored by Rhowyn |
