I haven't gotten that far into GIMP for brushes so that's no problem for me! Thank you for the warning though, I'll remember that if I find any free brushes

Hello! I'm considering trying to do some little tutorials for the basics of coloring pets, but I'd like to get a feel for what program(s) are used the most! Please reply and let me know which program you prefer to use—I've included a short list of programs that I know of, but if you use something not listed here, please let me know that too!
And if you haven't made any pets, I hope it's not too impertinent to ask what stopped you! Being unfamiliar with drawing programs, not being able to install programs, not being able to color the way you wanted, something else?
Installed Programs | In-Browser Tools |
Photoshop GIMP FireAlpaca Krita Paint Tool SAI Clip Studio Paint Procreate | Photopea Pixlr |

For my part, after I lost access to Photoshop (thank you old PS and new OS hating each other!), I have FireAlpaca and Krita. Seriously put a damper on my motivation to work on my pets, when things don't work like I'm used to

@Kiran I definitely feel you on that front! It took ages to get used to SAI when I switched from GIMP, and having never really used Photoshop, Krita was definitely very overwhelming when I first tried it out! As far as I know Krita's the closest to PS in terms of layout and functionality (I've heard it's just as powerful, too), but I suppose it is different enough that there's still a learning curve?

I did lean towards Krita first, because it did sound like that'd be the most similar-to-PS option, but then I had some sort of issue with it. I don't even remember what it was anymore, but it ended with me hopping over to FireAlpaca to see if that would work out better for me. That absolutely has some annoying points for me too though, I should probably give Krita another go. At the moment though, they've both rather landed in the "ugh, I'll do it someday"-pile

Big mood. Hopefully one day you'll have the energy to deal with it! If not...there's always other artists, I suppose!

I can definitely recommend SAI, but do know before you commit to a purchase that you cannot use brushes made for PS, GIMP, etc. because of the way SAI handles brushes, unless they've changed something since I switched to CSP. That means if you had any "stamper" brushes like glitter, leaves, snow, etc., as far as I know those cannot be converted into SAI brushes at all. The only way would be to stamp them on a transparent canvas and copy over the resulting image!

I used to use and love Paint Shop Pro until it was purchased by Corel That was way before this site existed.
I've tried colouring with Photopea (no installation required, it's a website) but I can't figure out how to make certain things work and so I gave up for now/this year ...
So essentially, I haven't completed any pet myself yet.

On my phone I use AutoDesk Sketchbook. On a computer, I go back and forth between SAI 2 and GIMP. I've been using Gimp for so long that it is more second nature for me. Plus I love how easy it is to find answers for GIMP and to use APNGs. That being said, since my dog chewed my pen for my Wacom tablet to tiny useless pieces, I pretty much use my S Pen on my phone to color pets.

Oh geeze, I'm sorry to hear about your tablet pen! That's unfortunate >< I'm not familiar with AutoDesk Sketchbook, is it similar to GIMP or SAI?

He's such a stinker, but it was my fault for leaving it somewhere he could get it. 😣 I'll replace it eventually, maybe even upgrade my Wacom tablet! This one is a good 6 years old at least.
AutoDesk Sketchbook is a fairly limited mobile app version of SAI and GIMP. There is also a computer version, but I don't have any experience with it. The biggest limitation for me now is lack of ability to make or import brushes. There was a step learning curve at first. Specifically with having to adapt to gestures directly on my screen, figuring out where everything is located, and how to adjust the pre-installed brushes to achieve the textures that I wanted.
